DY takes Dartmouth to Five-Sets in Volleyball Thriller
SOUTH YARMOUTH — The Dolphins gave Dartmouth all they could handle Monday evening, but the Indians pulled out a hard-fought five-set victory in this non league volleyball matchup.
Dartmouth, entering the match with a 1-1 record, needed all 5 sets to finally top DY. They claimed the first set with a score of 25-16, but DY rallied taking the next two sets behind strong play at the net and consistent serving with scores of 17-25 and 21-25. The Dolphins nearly closed the match in the fourth, but Dartmouth escaped with a narrow 25-23 win before pulling away in the decisive fifth set 15-6.
The back-and-forth battle echoed last year’s meetings between the two programs, when Dartmouth defeated DY in straight sets in one matchup and needed five sets to claim the other.
DY was led by Katie Popovich, who recorded 12 kills, 4 aces, and 8 digs. Rafaela Prebianchi directed the offense with 24 assists, while Shauna Baker added 8 kills and 4 blocks. Emily Ormon anchored the defense with 20 service receptions to go along with 3 aces and 8 digs.
With the win, Dartmouth improved to 2-1, while DY dropped to 0-2 on the season. These teams will face off one more time this year in Dartmouth’s gym on October 22nd. DY’s next game will be on Wednesday September 9th when they travel to Hudson High School and look to come back home with their first win of the year.
